Safetyplus Van evaluates not only the possible active and passive safety of a vehicle type but also the safety equipment of individual vehicles. The issue of the certificate is based on a standardised catalogue of criteria. The evaluation is performed on the basis of a predetermined points score weighted to take account of the special contribution made to reduce accident frequency or lessen the extent of damage. The greater the contribution to reducing accident frequency or damage, the greater the number of points awarded.

The vehicle under evaluation is checked to see if it meets certain minimum requirements. The stipulated minimum requirements are subdivided into two categories:

• The first category evaluates the safety-relevant equipment features (for example, assistance systems or load securing devices etc.).
   
• The second category covers the key driving dynamic requirements (for example, lane changing, circling, and braking in curves) to be fulfilled by the motor vehicle type.
