A further way of improving truck and van safety is to ensure the optimum training of the drivers. The Safetyplus Driver certification documents details of the training course which is based on the new EU professional driver directive and which is to be re-taken every two years.

The Safetyplus Driver certificate is only awarded when the driver has taken part in a special training programme. There are three types of training stages:

• 1. Driver safety training including load securing principles
      (basic training / practical training)
   
• 2. Regulations governing road, social and goods traffic law, road
      and environmental safety, services and logistics
   
• 3. Driver safety training including principles of optimising fuel
      consumption (practical training)
